pH and Titration Curves (16 Bit) v2.1 ($20.00) The ultimate resource for students and teachers of acids and bases. Great for student drills or as a utility for the teacher! since concentrations, pKa values etc are able to be set by the user. pH, pOH, concentrations of hydrogen ions, hydroxide ions and degrees of dissociation for strong and weak acids and bases and buffers. Shows the working for solutions to problems. Titration Curves can be displayed, printed or cut and pasted to other applications. You can show any titration curve you like

Description

New in v3.4

* Buffer graphs added
* Copy to clipboard support in the Answer window

pH and Titration Curves can be used:

  • By Students for drills with an almost unlimited number pH type problems,
  • As a quick way to calculate pH, pOH, hydrogen and hydroxide ion concentrations and degree of dissociation
  • To get worked solutions to real titrations,
  • By Teachers to generate an almost unlimited number of titration problems for testing,
  • By Teachers to create titration curves for use in resource sheets and exams.

The Acids and Bases Frame

Contains 5 option buttons:

Strong Acids & Strong Bases - Show a dropdown box with a selection of strong acids (or bases), and a textbox with the concentration of the acid (or base).

Weak Acids & Weak Bases - Show a dropdown box with a selection of weak acids (or bases), a textbox with the pKa of the acid (or pKb of the base), and a textbox with the concentration of the acid (or base).

Buffers - Shows a dropdown box with a selection of buffers (acid - base conjugate pairs), a textbox with the pKa of the acid, and a textbox with the ratio of concentration of acid : concentration of base.

note: All boxes are editable and Acids, Bases and Buffers can be Added and Edited using the built in Editor

Only the Weak Acids and Weak Bases options enable the degree of dissociation (%) Question Type

Randomly generate a question, selecting from the Acids and Bases Frame and the Question Type Frame

Randomly generate a question keeping the settings in the Acids and Bases Frame and the Question Type Frame.

Open the solution window, containing an explanation of the answer.

 Start the Titration Curves application

 Open the application’s Editor

 Pop up the Windows calculator

Editable Boxes

For all of the options, the dropdown box and textboxes are editable, so you are not restricted to the acids, bases and buffers supplied with the pH program.

Also you can enter concentrations, pKa, pKb values and acid-conjugate base ratios, to generate solutions to problems from other sources.

Extremes of values pop up a warning message.

Options

Round the Answer.

Use Assumptions - Applies to weak acids and weak bases.

Assumptions

For calculations involving weak acids this option assumes the initial concentration of acid is the same as the equilibrium concentration, ie. the acid is undissociated. Also that equilibrium concentration of hydrogen ions is equal to the equilibrium concentration of conjugate base.

Similarly, for calculations involving weak bases this option assumes the initial concentration of base is the same as the equilibrium concentration, ie. the base is undissociated. Also that equilibrium concentration of hydroxide ions is equal to the equilibrium concentration of conjugate acid.

Without the assumptions the program solves a quadratic to calculate a more exact value.

Enter your answer here.

It needs to be accurate to get a tick.

You can see the working by clicking the Answer Window button , or have the answer always displayed in the window by checking Show Answer in the Options menu.

 The Editor

The Acids, Bases and Buffers Editor allows you to customise what you work with.

Add or Edit available Acids Bases and Buffers.

Save any number of data files.

The Titration Curves Application

Shows a titration curve for the acid or base selected in the pH application

Configurable Graphs

You can set the Titration Curve's:

  • Fonts
  • Acid-Base Values - Are initially set at the values set on the main form for concentration, pKa and pKb, and 50mL volume.
Also you can change whether acid or base is being added, i.e. whether the pH goes up or down as the titration proceeds.
  • Graph Settings - Make changes to labels etc before Exporting, Printing or Copying to the Windows Clipboard.
  • The volume between points - Changes the interval between calculations of pH.
  • Colors - Set the colors of the graph

What you can do with the Titration Curves

  • Export the Titration Curve as a graphic file
  • Print the graph
  • Copy the titration curve to the Windows Clipboard and Paste the graph in other applications.
  • Zooming and Scrolling - There are zoom and scroll buttons, but you can also do this directly on the Curve.
    • To ZOOM IN - drag a zoom box down and left around the area you want to magnify
    • To SCROLL - right click and drag the Titration Curve wherever you want
