Description
Oko is a new development and data-management tool for creating Windows-based applications.
It uses an object-oriented programming language similar to C++ and has a rich set of visual tools that make application creation a relatively easy and intuitive task. Its integrated development environment allows you to create a wide range of functional units that can benefit both from the power of the language and the versatility of the GUI tools. An efficient code generator makes your source code compact and clear and lets you skip many explicit initializations. At the same time, code generation is configurable, so that you can insert your own code at any level, as well as turn off the automatic generation of any of the components. Code generation is also dynamic, which means that everything is generated "on the go", so that your program is fully modifiable at any time. For example, you can change the way events are handled, write your own low-level code, and specify a number of options for the compiler.
Unlike most high-level environments that present the user with a ’black box’ concealing the mechanisms behind the visible functionality, Oko shows you, on request, all of the source code, both generated and predefined. At your disposal is a powerful debugger rich in functionality, including the edit-and-continue capability. In fact, the entire Oko environment is written using Oko.
Oko has a set of visual database tools that use ODBC to connect to data sources. It can generate data forms and provides a set of flexible data controls to facilitate the creation of database applications. For many tasks, Oko can replace systems such as Microsoft Access generating database applications with no programming involved. The advantage of Oko is that its applications are very compact, fast, and, of course, stand-alone. It also has a built-in report generator.
While you modify your program, Oko is constantly watching out for any changes you make to keep the program information up-to-date, so that you can always browse through your program components without recompiling.
Oko produces either Win32 executables or dynamic link libraries (DLLs) from which you can export functions to be deployed in any other program. It creates stand-alone executables that need no other modules to run. Oko source code is compiled mostly into pseudo-code. On average, Oko programs run much faster than those designed with other similar tools such as Visual Basic, Delphi, etc. The reason is that Oko’s code is much simpler and more efficient: it uses no cumbersome predefined functionality; rather, it generates the necessary code only and includes the most basic components with no overhead. This implies that Oko programs simply do not do a lot of the work considered to be a necessary sacrifice for the sake of universality, which is why VB applications, for instance, take so long to load and run so slowly in many instances.
